Marshmallow leaves are recorded in several European pharmacopoeias as a soothing agent for the mucous lining of throat and respiratory system.


Marshmallow leaves produce a natural substance known as mucilage that coats and forms a protective layer on the mucous linings within the body. In Europe, where herbal remedies are more mainstream, Marshmallow leaf tea and other preparations are
recognized for their soothing effect on the throat, bronchial and respiratory passages. COMMON NAMES: Althea, Marshmallow, Sweet Weed.




Common use:
Soothes throat and upper respiratory system; cough; dry cough. NOTE: Marshmallow leaves have a gentler demulcent action than the root (#262).
