Indian Physic

Indigenous to the eastern United States, Indian Physic was used by American Indians and early colonists in much the same way as Ipecacuanha- as an expectorant and emetic- hence its other name American Ipecac.

In traditional herbal therapy, an emetic is a herb that in high doses cause vomiting to help rid the body of toxic substances or excess mucous congestion. In folk medicine, Indian Physic was used whenever a safe & reliable emetic was required. The dried
root was also used for dyspepsia and other digestive disorders, constipation and dropsy. One reference guide on Native American herbal medicine also notes that Indian Physic was very popular with the North American Indians for amenorrhea (absence or
suppression of menstrual flow), rheumatism and intermittent fever. COMMON NAMES: Gillenia, Bowman's Root, American Ipecacuanha.
