Eating This Fatty Snack Can Protect Your Heart and More

There have not been many epidemiologic studies undertaken to assess the effect of nut consumption on health risks.  A new study looked at their effects on cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

The study found that nut consumption was associated with a decreased body mass index and waist circumference, and a lower risk of hypertension.  Tree nut consumers, in particular, were also found to have lower weight, lower abdominal obesity, and a lower risk for metabolic syndrome.

According to the study, as reprinted on the website Green Med Info:

“Nut/tree nut consumption was associated with a decreased prevalence of selected risk factors for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and [metabolic syndrome].”
